MARION, Ill. — Jacob Kroeger did what an ace does.

He got the Maryville baseball team’s pursuit of a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship started on the right foot, even if it happened 24 hours later than expected.

The Palmyra, Mo., product threw six scoreless innings Thursday as the second-seeded Saints beat Rockhurst 9-3 in their opening round game at Mtn. Dew Park. The left-handed Kroeger struck out six, walked three and allowed three hits in improving to 7-0 this season.

Quincy High School graduate Noah Harbin pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Saints.

Rain washed out three of the four games scheduled to be played Wednesday, moving the entire tournament back a day. In Thursday’s other first-round games, William Jewell outlasted Drury 3-2 in 11 innings, and top-seeded Indianapolis beat Lewis 5-2.

Quincy University, which won its opener against Missouri-St. Louis 5-4 in 10 innings in the only game played Wednesday, will face Indianapolis at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Senior right-hander Kobe Essien is expected to start for the Hawks (26-25).
