The List, Episode 5: Ranking favorite Chicago Cubs comes with some local flair
QUINCY — Stan Musial. Albert Pujols. Willie McGee. Ozzie Smith. Bob Gibson.
Those were the most common names Muddy River Sports readers submitted as the players who would top their list of their top 10 favorite St. Louis Cardinals. Enos Slaughter got one mention, and Whitey Herzog had a couple of mentions, too.
The most interesting — and encouraging — aspect of the reader-submitted lists was no one tried to simply rank the 10 best Cardinals following last week’s episode of “The List,” in which Muddy River Sports Editor Matt Schuckmand and Sports Writer Shane Hulsey offered their personal top 10 lists.
Many of the submitted lists had players like David Eckstein, Tom Herr, David Freese and Terry Pendleton on them. One reader even had Stubby Clapp on his list.
So who makes your list this week?
Schuckman and Quincy High School girls soccer coach Travis Dinkheller, who is a lifelong Chicago Cubs fans and has passed his passion for Cubbie blue to his son, Cooper, challenged themselves to name their top 10 favorite Cubs.
The influence of WGN as the broadcast home of the Cubs in the 1980s showed, as did the local connections with Quincy having been a minor league affiliate of the Cubs at one point.
Take a listen to who Schuckman and Dinkheller have on their lists and then chime in with your own top 10 favorite Chicago Cubs players.
