Wipperman’s grand slam caps 10-run outburst over two innings for Gems in home victory
QUINCY — After letting a four-run lead slip away, the Quincy Gems scored a combined 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings Thursday night — highlighted by Dylan Wipperman’s grand slam in the sixth — to defeat the O’Fallon Hoots 16-6 in a Prospect League game at QU Stadium.
The third-place Gems (6-7 second half, 25-20 overall) are 1 ½ games behind Normal and 1 game behind Burlington in the Great River Division.
The Gems and Hoots were tied at 6-6 entering the bottom of the fifth, despite the Gems having just one hit in the first four innings. Quincy collected six hits in the fifth, including a two-run double by Otto Jones, an RBI single by Logan Voth and a three-run homer to right field by Hayden Moore, his second of the season.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Jayden Shafer singled, Voth doubled and Moore walked to load the bases for Wipperman, who homered for the first time this season.
Noah Harbin earned his first victory of the season with three innings of relief, allowing one run.
Voth, Shafer and Maurice La Fon each had two hits for Quincy. Moore walked three times and scored three runs.
