NORMAL — The Quincy Gems split a Prospect League doubleheader with the Normal Cornbelters on Saturday night at the Corn Crib, winning the opener 8-5 but losing the second game 11-3.

The Gems (3-8) scored five runs in the first three innings of the opener and never relinquished the lead. Cam Suto had an RBI single and Luke Jessen had a bases-loaded walk in the second inning. Lucas Loos had an RBI groundout in the second inning, and Logan Voth drove in a pair of runs in the third inning with a triple.

Normal (8-3) scored twice in the fourth to get within 5-2, but Quincy responded with an RBI double by Kyle Hvidsten in the sixth. A solo homer by Jessen and an RBI double by Voth rounded out the Gems’ scoring.

Ryan Foley was the winning pitcher for the Gems, allowing two runs and two hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Joe Siervo had three hits and scored three runs for the Gems.

Quincy jumped on top in the first inning of the second game when leadoff hitter Easton Mains hit a home run. Loos added an RBI double in the frame.

However, Normal scored once in the first and then knocked starter Jake Syverson out of the game with six runs in the second inning. Syverson only recorded four outs while allowing three hits, one walk and three hit batters.

Normal extended its lead to 10-2 after three innings. Quincy had three hits in the first inning and just four hits in the next six innings. The Gems’ only other run scored in the seventh inning when Koza raced across home plate when Cornbelters catcher Colin Kalinowski threw to first after Mains struck out.

Koza and Jumper both had two hits in the second game.
