Two-out success for Hannibal baseball team supports solid pitching performance by Scott
HANNIBAL, Mo. — Persistence with two outs paid off for the Hannibal baseball team against Palmyra on Friday.
The Pirates scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth after the first two batters of the innings were retired, and their pitching held the Panthers at bay over the final three innings as the Pirates won 6-2 at the Veterans Sports Complex.
Cole Baxter grounded out and Brody Wilson popped out to begin the fourth, then Gavin Dudley and Cooper Scott singled. Reid Holliday singled, and Dudley scored after the ball got away from left fielder Ty Haskins. Patrick Arthaud walked, setting the stage for his brother, Alex Arthaud, to drive in Scott. Holliday scored on an error by second baseman Rylan Compton.
The Pirates added another run on an RBI ground out by Holliday in the sixth following two scoreless innings by Scott on the mound. Scott finished the game with five strikeouts while allowing eight hits and one earned run in six innings.
Scott surrendered a single and a walk to begin the seventh, but Christian Neisen relieved Scott and retired the final three batters.
Hannibal (11-13) will have the weekend off before traveling to Bowling Green to face the Bobcats on Monday. Palmyra (8-8) will play a doubleheader with Dixon and South Callaway on Saturday before facing Liberty (Ill.) on Monday.
