Three-run homer in bottom of sixth sinks Notre Dame softball team in 4-1 road loss to Carrollton
CARROLLTON, Ill. — The Quincy Notre Dame girls softball team scored first and led 1-0 after 4 ½ innings, but Carrollton tied the game in the bottom of the fifth and then took the lead in the sixth with a three-run homer to claim a 4-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon.
Singles by Vanna Holmes and Hannah Uhles against QND starter Caitlin Bunte brought Deci Walls to the plate. Walls belted a three-run homer to center field to break a tie score.
Bunte doubled with two outs in the seventh, but Josie Boyer grounded out against Hawks pitcher Lauren Flowers to end the game.
Carrollton tied the score in the fifth on a single by Brookelyn Ellerman, a sacrifice bunt and a fielding error.
The only run for Notre Dame (15-4), which has lost three of its last five games, came on Alyssa Ley’s two-out double to right, scoring Madalyn Boyer.
Notre Dame was limited to three hits, while Flowers struck out 14 batters and walked only two. Bunte allowed eight hits and no walks while striking out seven.
