Straus scores points in five events, wins two to help C-SC track team take second at own invitational

CANTON, Mo. — Delaney Straus finished in the points in five different events, including hitting a provisional qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles, to help the Culver-Stockton College women’s track and field team to a second-place finish at the Culver-Stockton Invitational Friday afternoon at Richeson Track.

The Wildcats garnered 119.5 team points to finish second behind Washington University, which had 248 team points. Central Methodist ended with 86.5 points to place third, while Columbia College finished fourth with 75.67 points.

The Culver-Stockton men’s track and field team recorded 78 points to place fifth. Columbia College won the team competition with 129 points while Washington University garnered 120 points. Central Methodist and State Fair Community College were fourth and fifth with 116 and 84 points, respectively.

Straus placed first in the javelin with a throw of 116 feet, 7 inches, and she captured the 400 hurdles. In that event, Straus broke the school record with a time of 1:02.56, which is below the provisional qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championships.

Straus placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.71 seconds, sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 7 1/4 inches, and seventh in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

Faith Younce also set a school record Friday, finishing first in the 10,000-meter run in a record time of 43:32.07. Younce also placed second in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:13,71.

Zoi Smith received points in seven events, including tying her own school record in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet. Kinlie Judd matched Smith’s effort with a vault of 10 feet as well. 

In other events, Smith placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 104 feet, f4 inches, sixth in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 14:30.88, seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.56 seconds, and eighth in three events — the shot put with a mark of 35 feet, 1/2 inch, the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:16.81, and the 5000-meter run with a time of 24:57.77.

Abigail Mooney finished third and fourth in the high jump and the pole vault, respectively. In the high jump, Mooney recorded a mark of 5 feet, 1 1/4 inches, while in the pole vault, she hit 9 feet, 6 1/4 inches.

Emma Berry placed second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 44:40.77 and fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 14:22.69. Emma Staats was the other Wildcat to receive points, finishing fourth in the javelin with a throw of 107 feet, six inches.

In the men’s meet, Drew Mallett led the Wildcats by scoring in five events, including setting a school record in the 200-meter dash. Mallett finished in a time of 21.49 seconds to eclipse the previous record by .31 seconds.

In other events, Mallett placed fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 9 3/4 inches, fifth in the javelin with a throw of 149 feet, 3 inches, and seventh in the long jump with leap of 21 feet, 1 1/2 inches. Mallett also set a personal best in the 110 hurdles with time of 15.32 seconds, finishing sixth.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Kenny Tucker placed sixth with personal best time of 11:24.90. He placed seventh in the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet, 4 1/4 inches.

Jabez Rivers finished second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.92 seconds. Judah Rivers placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.05 seconds. Kile Dowd placed second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:59.17.

Several Wildcats are slated to compete in the Drake Relays April 23-24 in Des Moines, Iowa.
