Showcase Q&A: Canton’s Glasgow discusses nursing, country music and traveling

The fourth annual Muddy River Showcase takes place June 21 at John Wood Community College’s Student Activity Center. The girls game will tip at 2 p.m. with the boys game to follow at 4 p.m. General admission is $10.
CANTON, Mo. — Macy Glasgow’s personality and approach to life make nursing the perfect career choice.
“I just really enjoy helping people and making a difference when people need it most,” Glasgow said.
Glasgow, a Canton graduate, has already started her path toward becoming a nurse as a certified nursing assistant at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, and she will enroll at Blessing Rieman College of Nursing and Health Sciences this fall.
“I’ve done pretty well as far as dual credits, so I’ve completely bypassed going to either QU or Culver, so I’ll just attend there and get my BS in about three years,” Glasgow said.
Glasgow enjoys the day-to-day challenges that come with being a nurse.
“I love learning, and I also love being able to do things myself and be hands-on,” Glasgow said. “I don’t want to sit in a classroom. I want to be out there and learn. Being a CNA and one day a nurse, it’s all hands-on, and that’s really nice.”
Glasgow is unsure of the exact path she will take after she completes her schooling at Blessing-Rieman, but she believes her time as a CNA will allow her to hit the ground running in a full-time role.
“I think watching other people be nurses and allowing myself these opportunities is going to make the transition smooth,” Glasgow said.
Glasgow, a 1,000-point scorer at Canton, will have one more chance to take the basketball court when she plays for the Missouri girls in the fourth annual Muddy River Showcase. Glasgow discussed her relationship with her sister, Taylor, country music and more with Muddy River Sports Writer Shane Hulsey in this Showcase Q&A.
Q: What are you looking forward to most about playing in the Muddy River Showcase?
A: Of course, getting to play one last time, but also getting to play with the girls I’ve played against for years. It will be fun to have them as teammates instead of opponents this last go around.
Q: Are there a few players in particular you’re really looking forward to playing with?
A: Not really, but having the Palmyra girls for sure will be fun. We go way back being in the Tony Lenzini Tournaments. Kwyn Hamlin at Scotland County, we’ve had her in our district for quite some time.
Q: What was your favorite class in high school?
A: I really enjoyed math. I had a really good teacher. I took trigonometry, statistics. I really enjoyed that, and also science classes. I’m going to nursing school, so I loved anatomy, biology, all those classes.
Q: Do you know what you want to do after your schooling?
A: I plan to just be a nurse and see what area of nursing I like the most, then maybe go back and get my nurse practitioner degree.
Q: Do you have any nurses in your family?
A: I do. I have quite a few. Not in my immediate family, but I have several cousins who went to school to be nurses, and they love it. Some are even nurse practitioners now.
Q: Did they have some influence on getting you into nursing in the first place?
A: I would say so, then also just growing up being so curious about the field, then eventually I shadowed and found out, “Yeah, this is where I want to be.”
Q: How many siblings do you have?
A: I have a younger sister. She’ll be a junior this year. We got to play softball and basketball together, so that was a pretty cool experience.
Q: What were each of those seasons like playing with her?
A; We had our rough patches at times, of course, just having a sibling on your team. You’re likely to butt heads, but I just enjoyed having her there for guidance and things, too. Like if I was having a bad game, she was always there to tell me what I was doing wrong and encourage me to fix that.
Q: Who’s the more outgoing sister?
A: It definitely depends. I’d say I’m more friendly, but she’ll definitely call people out on things. I think we’re both pretty outgoing, but it just depends on the circumstances.
Q: So, you’re the out-going, happy-go-lucky sister, and she’s the fiery one?
A: Yes, she’s a little pistol.
Q: Doesn’t that come with being the little sister, though?
A: I guess so.
Q: What traits of yourself do you see in her?
A: When we really want to do something, we’re driven to do that. Whatever we set our mind to, we get it accomplished. She’s also stubborn. I’d say I’m stubborn about certain things. Whatever we’re passionate about, we want to get it done and achieve whatever that may be.
Q: Do you have any favorite restaurants in Quincy?
A: I really like Texas Roadhouse. I like to branch out, but I also stick to my sirloin, and I like their dinner rolls, of course, but I also like to hit up Hula Bowls. After a shift or something, I usually like to hit up there.
Q: What’s your go-to at Hula Bowls?
A: I usually get the tropical bowl.
Q: Have you tried any of their smoothies or lotus drinks?
A: I’ve had the PB&A. That’s really good.
Q: What’s your favorite genre of music?
A: I like a little bit of everything. Country is mostly what I listen to, though.
Q: Do you have a certain era of country music that you like?
A: I’d say a little bit of everything. I grew up listening to the older country becuase of my parents, but I also stay up to date on things today.
Q: Do you have some favorite artists?
A: I really like Morgan Wallen, of course. I like George Strait.
Q: What other hobbies do you have outside of work, sports and school?
A: My family likes to travel. We’re going on a big family vacation again this year to Mexico. I enjoy being outdoors — fishing, being out by the pool area. We have a pool.
Q: How many times have you been out of the country?
A: I want to say five times. Quite a few now.
Q: What is the farthest away from home you’ve been?
A: Every year we’ve gone somewhere, we’ve gone to Mexico. We just tried a new place in Mexico. The flight there is about 3 ½, 4 hours.
Q: Is there anywhere you want to travel in the future?
A: I really want to go to Turks and Caicos, but that will probably be a while from now.
Q: What do you enjoy most about those trips to Mexico?
A: We’ve been to Florida several times, Orange Beach. We’ve tried several beaches here in America, so being able to go experience different culture and really pretty beaches and being able to stay in an all-inclusive resort is really different compared to getting your Airbnb on the beach or something.
Q: What is one thing people should know about Macy Glasgow?
A: I’m a pretty social person. I’m all about a good time. No negative vibes. I just want good energy all the time. I just really enjoy being around people.
