Pirates sending nine athletes to Class 4 state track and field championships
HANNIBAL, Mo. — The Hannibal track and field team will be well represented at the Class 4 state track and field championships this weekend at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.
Nine Pirates qualified for state by finishing fourth or better in their respective events at last Saturday’s Class 4 sectional at Mexico High School.
On the girls side, Kameil Crane and Harper Carr each qualified in the javelin. Crane, who has signed with Princeton University, won the sectional with a throw of 42.9 meters. Carr advanced by finishing fourth with a 35.94-meter throw.
Two girls jumpers qualified — Taegen Novel in the high jump and Sameya Dean in the triple jump. Novel cleared the bar at 1.62 meters to finish second, and Dean’s jump of 10.19 meters moved her into fourth.
Senior Jocelyn Dorsey will compete for a state title in the 800-meter run after a season-best time of 2:21.63, which was good for third place.
Two boys throwers are headed to the state capitol. Houston Morrison’s discus throw of 47.07 meters and Tre Hoskins’ shot put throw of 14.51 meters earned them third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively.
Cameron Davis’ triple jump of 13.26 meters helped him finish third. Chance Whiteside’s season-best performance in the 110 hurdles earned him a spot at state by .03 seconds.
Both the boys and girls 4×200 relay teams set season bests. The girls finished seventh with a time of 1:49.38, and the boys missed out on qualifying for state by less than a second. They finished fifth at 1:30.04, .90 seconds behind McCluer.
