Macomb’s McMillen edges Central’s Rigg in photo finish to win 100 dash at Quincy Invitational
QUINCY — Macomb junior Kylan McMillen thought he had won, but he was not 100 percent sure.
That is because he and Camp Point Central junior Curtis Rigg were neck and neck coming to the finish line during the 100-meter dash during Saturday’s Quincy High School Invitational at Flinn Stadium.
“I was out of breath for a little bit, but the coaches said I did well,” McMillen said. “At the end, I got that lean, and I thought I had it.”
He leaned just enough. McMillen edged out Rigg by .01 seconds to win the race in 11.38 seconds.
McMillen kicked it into gear after a less than stellar start to beat Rigg, who set a new personal record at 11.39 seconds.
“Out of the blocks, I was like, ‘Oh shoot, this is going to be competitive,’” McMillen said. “My drive wasn’t great. I got my chest a little high too quick, so I just got to top speed and knew I had to push really hard because he was a competitor.”
Rigg set a new PR despite dealing with a jammed toe on his right foot.
“I was right there,” Rigg said. “Honestly, I thought I beat him, but it’s like, ‘Oh well.’ I’m not too worried about it.”
McMillen looks forward to future battles with Rigg.
“I hope to see him again,” McMillen said. “I like racing against him. It’s good competition.”
McMillen secured two more comfortable victories as the day proceeded. McMillen won the 200 dash in 23.62 seconds, nearly a full second clear of Payson Seymour’s Jordan Martin. He also anchored Macomb’s 4×200 relay team that finished 2.20 seconds ahead of Quincy High School.
McMillen said he felt confident about his team’s chances in the 4×200 after Dami Famodu, the third leg of the Bombers’ relay team, pulled away from Quincy’s Carter Schenk.
“I saw Dami coming around. Over the first 60 meters, he had him, then I was like, ‘Yeah, we got this in the bag,’” McMillen said.
The Bombers finished fourth out of seven boys teams at the invite. On the girls side, the Bombers finished second behind Quincy.
