BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Quincy Gems had the tying runs on base with one out in the top of the ninth inning, but a strikeout and a flyout ended the game as the Burlington Bees won the Prospect League season opener for both teams in a 10-8 decision.

The Gems gave up five runs in the first inning and three more in the third to fall behind 8-2. A three-run homer by Lucas Loos capped a four-run fifth inning for the Gems, and Riley Black contributed an RBI single in the sixth inning to help Quincy get within 10-7.

The Gems failed to capitalize on three walks in the seventh inning as Cross Jumper flied out to end the frame. The Gems had runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth, but Loos was thrown out trying to steal third.

With one out in the ninth, Joe Siervo and Jimmy Koza walked, and Jack Zebig drove in Siervo with a single. However, Jumper struck out and Loos flew out to end the game.

Black had three of Quincy’s 11 hits, but the Gems didn’t take advantage of 12 walks from Burlington pitchers. Peyton Clampitt took the loss for Quincy, allowing four hits, five walks and eight runs in 2 1/3 innings.
