Around the area: Pirates win sixth straight, Lowe tosses another shutout, Mustangs score early
FULTON, Mo. — Alaina Power and Maggie Routh each scored their first career goal as the Hannibal girls soccer team defeated Fulton 8-0 in a North Central Missouri Conference game. This is the Pirates’ sixth straight win and fourth consecutive shutout. Goalkeeper Ava Turner has notched 12 shutouts this season.
Ashley Davis netted a hat trick and also dished out an assist. Malia Stolte, Abbie Martin and Aly Falconer each had a goal for the Pirates (17-2-2, 9-0 NCMC).
Thomas scores in first 20 seconds, but Raiders fall to Senators
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Sierra Thomas scored 20 seconds into the Quincy Notre Dame girls soccer team’s game at Lee Field, but Springfield scored three second-half goals in a 5-2 victory. Addie Flesch scored the other goal for the Raiders (11-10) on a header off a cross from Sage Stratton late in the first half that tied the game at 2.
Lowe tosses one-hit shutout, Wolves defeat Saukees
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — McKinley Lowe tossed her third straight shutout as the Pleasant Hill softball team defeated Pittsfield 4-0, while the Saukees used Kelsey Freesmeyer’s bases-clearing double to pull away from Rushville-Industry in a 9-2 that earned them a split on the day.
In Lowe’s last three starts, she has pitched 19 innings, struck out 45 and given up just one hit. The Wolves (15-2) broke through on a Hannah Hill sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth that drove in Lowe. Hill and Lowe each drove in runs with two-out singles in the seventh.
Against Rushville-Industry, Pittsfield (13-5) trailed 2-1 before Freesmeyer’s double in the fourth inning. Grace Henry delivered a two-run triple in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-2. The Saukees capitalized on three Rockets errors to score four unearned runs.
Early runs, Shaffer’s strong pitching help Mustangs cruise
RUSHVILLE, Ill. — The Unity baseball team defeated Rushville-Industry 8-3 and scored all of its runs in the first three innings. The Mustangs (16-4) notched seven straight hits in a five-run second inning. Each of the top four hitters in the Unity lineup had multiple hits. Cody Shaffer tossed 5 ⅓ innings and gave up just one run.
Indians’ Holsted finishes single shy of cycle
MONROE CITY, Mo. — Drew Holsted doubled, tripled and homered in Clark County’s 18-5 victory over Monroe City. He was on deck when Wyatt Davis struck out ending the top of the fifth with the Indians leading 18-4. Grady Webster held the Panthers (3-9) to one run in the bottom of the fifth, which put the mercy rule in effect and left Holsted a single away from hitting for the cycle. Webster and Caleb Nelson each had three hits for the Indians (13-5).
