Around the area: Chargers walk off with victory, Titans’ Larson plates winning run, Panthers thrive on pair of homers
CARTHAGE, Ill — Wesley Robertson’s walk-off single was the exclamation point on the Illini West baseball team’s 6-5 victory over Lewistown-Valley-Cuba on Monday.
With the game tied at 5 and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Carter Chapin reached on an error, and Colby Robertson singled to move the winning run to second for Wesley Robertson. He lined a single to left field that drove in Chapin and gave the Chargers (21-4) their fourth straight victory.
The Chargers trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth. Wyatt Robertson doubled leading off the inning, then Stephen Sparks singled to score Robertson two batters later. Reece Shoup pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, setting the stage for Wesley Robertson’s walk-off.
Larson drives in only run as Titans squeak by Indians
WEST HANCOCK, Ill. — Lakinn Larson’s RBI single in the third inning proved to be the difference in the West Hancock softball team’s 1-0 victory over Payson Seymour. Jordyn Climer singled leading off the bottom of the third, stole second, took third on a line out and scored on Larson’s single. Jordyn Climer also tossed a complete-game six-hitter for the Titans (12-10).
Miller, Neisen homer as Panthers blowout Tornadoes
CAMP POINT, Ill. — Garrett Neisen hit a grand slam and Mason Miller hit a two-run home run in the Camp Point Central baseball team’s 15-3 victory over Griggsville-Perry. Neisen’s grand slam came in a nine-run third inning for the Panthers (10-12). Miller’s home run with two outs in the bottom of the first gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Eagles score 10 in third inning in rout of Suns
LIBERTY, Ill — The Liberty baseball team sent 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run third inning and beat Southeastern 17-3. The first six batters of that inning reached safely. The Eagles (8-15) scored six runs with two outs, and the Suns made five errors in the inning. Jack Sparrow went 2 for 3 and accounted for six of Liberty’s runs with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Chargers come through in clutch in victory over Cyclones
COLCHESTER, Ill. — The Illini West softball team scored six runs with two outs in their 8-2 victory over West Prairie. All three of the Chargers’ third-inning runs came with two outs, as Elly Krieg got the Chargers on the board first with a single, then after two walks, Corin Robinson drove in two with a single of her own. The Chargers scored two more two-out runs on an error in the fifth, and Robinson extended the Chargers’ lead to 7-2 with a two-out RBI single in the sixth.
Eagles score 20 in three innings to dispatch of Hornets
LIBERTY, Ill. — The Liberty softball team scored eight runs in the first inning and another 10 in the third to defeat Brown County 20-1. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Eagles (16-10) scored 20 unanswered runs over the next three innings, 10 of which were unearned. All 11 players who had a plate appearance for the Eagles either scored or drove in a run.
