Schisler turns in best start of season for Gems, who knock off Prospect League’s top team
QUINCY — Jake Schisler turned in the best starting pitching performance of the summer for the Quincy Gems, allowing one hit, one walk and one unearned run in six innings in a 4-3 victory over the Cape Catfish on Sunday night in a Prospect League game at QU Stadium.
The Catfish, the Prospect’s League’s best team, lost for only the second time in 16 games. The Gems improved to 6-12.
Schisler, who graduated from Quincy Notre Dame earlier this month, didn’t allow a hit until Landon Gosney’s double in the fifth inning. Schisler only threw 71 pitches.
Peyton Clampitt pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing a two-run opposite field homer in the eighth inning over the right-field fence to Jude Putz. Clampitt recorded the first out of the ninth, and Jake Syverson struck out the last two hitters to end the game.
Quincy took the lead in the first inning on Cam Suto’s two-out RBI single. The Gems scored two more runs in the third on back-to-back two-out doubles by Jack Zebig and Nathan VerMaas. Their final run came in the sixth inning when Zebig scorched a line drive over the right-field fence.
Zebig had three hits and Suto had two for the Gems. The game was played in 1 hour, 55 minutes.
