Saukees, Hornets lead local brigade of athletes to qualify for Class 1A boys state track meet
PLEASANT PLAINS, Ill. — The Pittsfield boys track and field team puts its speed on display Wednesday at the Class 1A Pleasant Plains Sectional, while Brown County showcased its strength.
The Saukees qualified for the state meet in two individual sprint events and two relays, while a pair of Hornets won the shot put and discus titles.
All local qualifiers will participate in the Class 1A state championships at O’Brien Stadium on the Eastern Illinois University campus in Charleston, beginning May 29. The top two finishers in each event at the sectional qualify for state, along with any other athletes meeting state qualifying times or distances.
Pleasant Plains won the team title with 152 points, while Pittsfield was third with 75 points.
Pittsfield junior Taylor Graham won the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds, while Camp Point Central junior Curtis Rigg was second in 11.29 seconds. Pittsfield junior Bodine Marable won the 400 dash in 50.59 seconds.
The Saukees finished second in the 4×100 relay as the team of Riggston Bonds, Graham, Adam Hoover and Jaydenn Moore finished in 44.24 seconds. The team of Bonds, Jonas Anderson, Marable and Dominic Cooper was second in the 4×400 relay in 3:33.79.
The Saukees finished third in the 4×200 relay (1:32.83) and the 4×800 relay (8:41.22).
Brown County sophomore Cooper Adcox won the shot put with a toss of 15.55 meters, while Camp Point Central’s Evan Walker was second with a toss of 14.71 meters. Brown County junior Trey Fullerton won the discus with a toss of 43.89 meters.
Hornets senior Kanye Mitchell finished second in the 110 hurdles in 15.52.
Liberty sophomore Tate Huber won the long jump with a personal-best leap of 6.77 meters, while Rigg was second with a jump of 6.49 meters. Liberty senior Luke Schuette won the 300 hurdles in 44.44 seconds.
At the Class 3A sectional at O’Fallon, the Quincy High School boys team had no individual athletes place higher than fifth.
