Rolando, Rabe provide extra inning heroics as Unity baseball team stuns Liberty

Unity

MENDON, Ill. — Simon Rabe’s swing kept the Mendon Unity baseball team’s hopes alive.

Carter Rolando turned those hopes into jubilation.

Rolando’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th drove in the winning run as Unity defeated Liberty 2-1 on Wednesday in a West Central Conference game.

After Jackson Sims gave Liberty a 1-0 lead with an RBI ground out in the top of the ninth inning, Rabe led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a solo home run to knot the score.

Mustangs pitcher Adler Gray induced a groundout by Charlie Curry to end the top of the 10th to strand Gavin Edgar at third. That set the stage for Rolando’s heroics. With the bases loaded and two outs, Rolando singled to center field, driving in Avery Frese to win the game.

Miles Moulton singled leading off the bottom of the 10th. After a Kendall Knox strikeout, Frese reached on an error. Rabe was intentionally walked. Sims threw out Moulton at home on a soft ground ball by Sawyer Allen for the second out, which brought Rolando to the plate.

The Mustangs (6-3) will face Camp Point Central on Thursday, while Liberty (6-3) will take on Beardstown on Saturday.
