Quincy’s Mateo, Harrison receive first team all-Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball honors
QUINCY — Quincy University outfielder Matt Mateo and pitcher Roman Harrison were first-team all-Great Lakes Valley Conference selections, announced by the league on Tuesday.
Outfielder Ben Dahlof and pitcher Kobe Essien earned honorable mention honors.
Mateo, a junior from Kissimmee, Fla., led the team in hits (65), home runs (14), triples (3), runs (57), total bases (119), slugging percentage (.647) and on-base plus slugging (1.099). He hit .353 and drove in 53 runs, both second on the team. He was in the top five in the GLVC in runs, home runs, RBIs and total bases. Mateo earned GLVC Player of the Week honors after going 10-for-19 with four home runs, one triple, and 10 RBIs in four games against Drury.
Harrison, a junior from Mount Vernon, led all qualified Hawk pitchers in earned run average (4.17), walks and hits per innings pitched (1.30) and strikeouts (67). He pitched 58 1/3 innings in 15 appearances, holding opponents to a .225 batting average. He ranked sixth in the GLVC in ERA and opponent batting average, and fifth in earned runs allowed. He moved into a full-time starting role during conference play, posting a 3.15 ERA over 37 2/3 innings.
Dahlof, a junior from Roseville, Minn., served as the Hawks’ primary leadoff or No. 2 hitter, leading the team in batting average (.388), on-base percentage (.464) and stolen bases (21). He also scored 44 runs and collected 64 hits, including seven doubles and three home runs, and he drove in 23. He finished eighth in the league in batting average and tied for seventh in stolen bases.
Essien, a senior from Mahomet, led Quincy in innings pitched (66) and delivered two complete games, including a dominant complete-game shutout against Lewis. He finished the season with a 3-1 record across 13 starts, posting a 5.05 ERA, second-best on the team, and a 1.45 WHIP. Essien also tallied 62 strikeouts, tied for second-most among Quincy pitchers.
