BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — Luke Guthrie played himself into contention.

After opening the second stage of Korn Ferry Tour Q-School by shooting a 1-over 73 at the Southern Hills Plantation Club, the Quincy native responded during Wednesday’s second round with a 5-under 67 that vaulted him 33 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 19th at 4-under overall.

The top 19 golfers and ties at the end of four rounds advance to the Korn Ferry Tour Q-School Finals, which take place Nov. 4-7 at the Marshwood Course at the Landings Club in Savanna, Ga.

Guthrie, who had just two birdies in his opening round, started the second round with a 3-under 33 on the front nine. It was the fifth best score on the front nine in the 72-player field. He bogeyed the par-4 10th hole, but made birdie on three of his final seven holes. Only four players enjoyed a better second round.

The University of Illinois graduate is one of 10 players tied at 4-under and he is four strokes out of the top 10. There is a three-way tie atop the leaderboard at 10-under.

Quincy High School graduate Zach Burry also earned a spot in the second stage of Q-School and will tee it up Oct. 19-22 at RTJ Golf Trail at Highland Oaks in Dothan, Ala.
