BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Quincy Gems rallied to tie the score of Friday night’s Prospect League game against the Burlington Bees with three runs in the ninth inning.

However, the Gems will have to wait until July 17 to win the game as part of a doubleheader.

The Gems were limited to one run through eight innings. Riley Black led off the top of the ninth with a single, and after an out, Jack Zebig singled to right field. Otto Jones then loaded the bases when he reached on an error by Bees center fielder Trent Rice.

Harry Fandre then was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Two runs scored on the next play when Bees first baseman Keanu Spencer committed an error.

Carter Poole pitched a spotless ninth inning for Quincy, and the game was stopped by lightning in the top of the 10th. The game then was suspended when the rain started.

P.J. Schmidt lasted 3 2/3 innings in his debut as a starter for Quincy, allowing three runs. Relievers Stephen Eskridge, Max Babich and Poole combined to allow on run in the next 5 1/3 innings.

Quincy was limited to four hits in nine innings.

The Gems (14-17, 1-2 second half) are in last place in the Great River Division, 1½ games behind Illinois Valley.
