Gems fall behind 5-0, then give up seven runs in fifth to lose by 10-run rule
BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Quincy Gems fell behind 5-0 during Tuesday night’s Prospect League game against the Burlington Bees, then gave up seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and lost 12-2 in a game shortened to seven innings at Community Field.
The Gems’ only runs came in the sixth and seventh innings. Easton Mains scored on a sacrifice fly by Cam Suto in the sixth, and Luke Jessen scored in the seventh when the Bees committed an error on an attempted double play.
Bees starter Ram Maxwell limited the Gems (1-5) to four hits and two walks in six innings. Bobby Helt allowed an unearned run in the seventh.
Quincy starter Peyton Clampitt dropped to 0-2 after allowing five hits, two walks and five runs in four innings. Reliever Connor Schwindeler allowed six hits and walked two while getting just two outs in the sixth.
No Gems player had more than one hit. The Gems are hitting .213 this season and have a team earned run average of 7.74, ranking 16th in the 17-team league in both categories.
