Gems bounce back after power outage in fifth inning but fall into three-way tie for second with road loss
ALTON, Ill. — After the power went out for 42 minutes at Lloyd Hopkins Field on Monday night, the Quincy Gems’ power seemed to flicker to life when play resumed.
However, a two-run fifth inning was only a brief spark as the Gems scored only one more run after that in a 6-3 loss to the Alton River Dragons in a Prospect League game.
The Gems (7-10 second half, 26-23 overall) now are tied for second place with Burlington and Clinton in the Great River Division. Normal now leads the division by four games.
A two-run double by Quincy’s Dayson Croes tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. The Gems didn’t score again until Otto Jones hit a solo home run in the ninth.
Pittsfield’s Peyton Apps was the starting pitcher, and he allowed two runs in four innings. Quincy’s Noah Harbin took the loss, allowing four hits, four walks and three runs in three innings.
Croes was the only Gem to collect more than two hits.
