QUINCY — A colossal conference clash. A cross-river showdown of state-ranked teams. A collegiate matchup with first place in the conference on the line. And champions to be crowned.

It’s going to be quite a weekend.

The madness starts Friday night when the Quincy High School boys basketball team travels to Moline with the chance to further solidify its spot atop the Western Big 6 Conference. Quincy (19-4, 10-0 WB6) leads Moline (22-3, 8-2 WB6) and Rock Island (16-7, 8-2 WB6) by two games in the league standings with four games to play.

The Maroons are riding a 14-game win streak and beat Rock Island last week when junior point guard Brody Harding scored 26 points. Both Quincy and Moline are receiving votes in the Class 4A state poll, and the Blue Devils beat the Maroons 63-49 at Blue Devil Gym in December.

But this game is at historic Wharton Field House, where the Maroons have beaten the Blue Devils each of the previous four seasons.

Also Friday night, the SuperFan Shootout at Quincy Notre Dame kicks off with three games, while seven games follow Saturday. The marquee game on Saturday is a matchup between Liberty, ranked fourth in Class 1A, and Monroe City, ranked No. 1 in Class 3.

In fact, the Shootout features three No. 1-ranked teams — the QND girls are No. 1 in Class 2A, while the Fort Madison (Iowa) boys are No. 1 in Class 3A — and another ranked team will challenge the QND boys on their own floor. Jacksonville Routt, which faces QND at 8 p.m., comes in ranked ninth in Class 1A.

And if that’s not enough to excite basketball fans, John Wood Community College welcomes Danville Area Community College to the Student Activity Center for a Mid-West Athletic Conference showdown. The Trail Blazers sit atop the MWAC with a 4-1 league record, a half-game ahead of the Jaguars and Parkland, who are both 3-1.

And if you’re willing to venture out in the cold for something other than basketball, the Illinois wrestling regionals take place this weekend and Quincy High School will be hosting the Class 3A event at the QHS gym.
