Croes extends hitting streak to 15 games but Gems fail to hang on to five-run lead in loss to Springfield

August 4, 2022 — by Muddy River News

Dayson Croes

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — After scoring seven runs in the second inning to take a 7-2 lead, the Quincy Gems didn’t score in the final seven innings and lost 12-7 to the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes on Thursday night in a Prospect League game at Robin Roberts Field.

The Gems used seven hits to score all of their runs in the second inning, but they only had four hits in the rest of the game. Dayson Croes had four hits for the Gems, and he now has eight hits in his last nine at-bats. He’s hitting .422 for the summer and has a 15-game hitting streak since joining the team on July 18.

Bennett Eltoft had three hits for Quincy (29-29 overall, 10-16 second half).

Lincoln Gooding took the loss in his first start of the summer, allowing eight runs in 3 2/3 innings. Connor Schwindeler allowed four runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

The Gems wrap up the regular season on Friday and Saturday with home games against Burlington.
