CornBelters receive 13 walks as Gems see five-game winning streak come to end
NORMAL — Thirteen walks proved to be too much to overcome for the Quincy Gems in an 11-4 loss to the Normal CornBelters Saturday night in a Prospect League game at the Corn Crib.
The Gems (10-13) saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. They are in second place in the Great River Division, trailing division-leading Clinton by 3 games.
Starter Anthony Ribes gave up four walks and four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Reliever Tyler Barker gave up five hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings, and Connor Schwindeler walked four and allowed two hits in 1 2/3 innings. A walk and a hit batter with the bases loaded forced in two Normal runs. Otto Jones, one of the catchers on the team, walked three more batters with the bases loaded before recording the final out in the eighth inning.
Riley Black did all the offensive damage for Quincy. His single to right field scored Lucas Loos in the first inning, and his sacrifice fly to left field in the third inning scored Jimmy Koza. Black then hit a two-run homer in the fifth. He singled to center in the eighth.
The rest of the Gems combined for five hits.
