‘Christmas in Quincy’: A Christmas carol for basketball fans throughout this area
Often my wife, Michelle, laughs at my quirkiness. Other times she just rolls her eyes.
It all depends on how off-color or out-of-bounds I get.
When we’re taking a road trip together — our goal each summer or fall is to visit a different national park — the radio is constantly tuned to music. My preferences are hard rock and outlaw country. Her tastes are a little more eclectic and a little less in-your-face.
As we roll along, certainly on songs where I don’t know or forget the lyrics, I tend to recreate the verses and the chorus with whatever pops in my head. Most of the time it doesn’t make sense and doesn’t always rhyme or follow the cadence of the original version, but it’s done purely to amuse her.
Sometimes, it’s done to annoy her, too, and see what kind of reaction I get.
One song where I reworked the lyrics happens to be one of my favorite Christmas tunes. And the version I created was done to celebrate our lives in this wonderful community and the blessing it is to have grown up in a sports savvy town.
So my Christmas gift to you is a remake of Alabama’s “Christmas in Dixie.” (If you don’t know the song or the melody, pull it up on YouTube or Spotify so you understand where this is coming from.)
Here is “Christmas in Quincy” …
By now in Adams County, there’s dribbling in the gyms
And out in Brown County, the Hornets sting and win
And maybe down in Pittsfield, “Texas” is being run
And in Hancock County, there’s game planning tonight
Christmas in Quincy, basketball is on the mind
Merry Christmas from Quincy, to hoops fans tonight
It’s windy in Chicago, players are transferring schools
There’s magic in river towns, where shots are going up
In McDonough County to Vergil Fletcher Gym
And all across this state, it’s holiday tournament time.
Christmas in Quincy, basketball is on the mind.
Merry Christmas from Quincy, to hoops fans tonight
And from our Muddy Buddy newsroom,
Merry Christmas tonight!
