Canton baseball team limited to one hit with 15 strikeouts in district semifinal setback

QUEEN CITY, Mo. — Gage Brownell was the Canton baseball team’s kryptonite on Tuesday.
Brownell, a junior right-handed pitcher for Schuyler County, tossed a one-hit complete game and struck out 15 batters in the Rams’ 3-1 victory over the Tigers in Tuesday’s Class 2 District 6 semifinal.
The Tigers’ only hit came in the bottom of the sixth when Brett Ehrenreich drove in the Tigers’ lone run with a single, bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Brownell struck out Ian Burbridge to end the inning, then fanned the side in order in the seventh.
Preston Brewer pitched 5⅔ innings, gave up one earned run, struck out 13 and walked one. Bleu Taylor retired all four batters he faced in relief.
Canton ends its season with a 12-6 record, while Schuyler County (17-11) will face Scotland County in the district championship game on Wednesday.
