Blue Devils get tying run on base in seventh but can’t score in frustrating 3-2 setback to Sterling

QUINCY — The close game woes continue to plague the Quincy High School baseball team.
The Blue Devils got the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh inning against Sterling on Monday, but they were unable to cash it in as they suffered a 3-2 Western Big 6 Conference loss. They now sport a 1-5 record in one-run games.
Jacob Salisbury led off the inning by reaching first on a dropped third strike. Kade Parkhill dropped down a sacrifice bunt to get Salisbury to second base, then Cameron Lawson grounded out, advancing Salisbury to third. Drake Gibson grounded out to first base on a 3-1 pitch to end the game.
Gibson completed all seven innings in 87 pitches and threw 65 strikes. Only one of the Golden Warriors’ runs was earned.
Sterling took their 3-2 lead on Eli Penne’s one-out single in the sixth.
Quincy (9-14, 3-8 WB6) will take on Quincy Notre Dame at Ferd Niemann Jr. Memorial Ballfield on Tuesday.
