99th Winchester Invitational Tournament

Brown County 57, Winchester West Central 56: Cole Behymer’s free throw with 12.5 seconds remaining in regulation pushed the sixth-seeded Hornets into the semifinals after they dodged a couple of bullets in the final seconds. Fouled with 5.7 seconds to play, the Cougars’ Gavin Little missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and when the rebound was pinged around, Little was able to grab it and get to the rim unabated. His uncontested layup attempt rimmed out, and Brown County’s Brody Woodward cleared the defensive rebound and ran out the clock.

Neither team led by more than four points in the final five minutes as the lead changed hands five times. The third-seeded Cougars missed the front end of three 1-and-1s in the final two minutes, while the Hornets went 2 of 6 from the line in the final 30.5 seconds. Behymer led the Hornets with 13 points, while Colby Wort had 12. Zack Evans led the Cougars with 17 points.

Brown County will face Petersburg PORTA/AC Central in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Greenfield-Northwestern 65, Pleasant Hill 27: The Tigers held the Wolves scoreless in the first quarter and led 41-6 at halftime of the consolation game. McCurley led the Wolves with 10 points.

Western d. Griggsville-Perry: The Tornadoes were forced to withdraw from the tournament due to COVID-19 protocols. The Wildcats advanced to the consolation semifinals.

Culver-Stockton College 72, Peru State 69: Down five points at halftime and seven after the Bobcats converted a turnover on the initial possession of the second half into a basket, the Wildcats erased the deficit within four minutes and then won the battle of tug-o-war with the lead. There were three lead changes and two ties in the second half with C-SC taking the lead for good on Jalen Blaize’s two free throws with 42 seconds to play. Jim King’s dunk and Javon Modester’s two free throws with 12 seconds left sealed the Heart of America Athletic Conference victory. Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor led C-SC (12-5, 3-5 Heart) with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Blaize had 18 points.

Women’s Basketball

At Charles Field House, Canton, Mo.

Culver-Stockton College 67, Peru State 54: Limiting the Bobcats to nine points in the second quarter gave the Wildcats the advantage necessary to snare a Heart of America Athletic Conference victory. C-SC turned Peru State’s 20 turnovers into 21 points and won the rebounding battle 43-34. Kaysie Newson led the Wildcats (9-8, 3-5 Heart) with 12 points, while Laken Hugenberg had 11 points and eight rebounds.

At Student Activity Center, Quincy

Lake Land 49, John Wood Community College 47: The Trail Blazers had a 10-point third-quarter lead chiseled into before the Lakers took the lead with 33 seconds remaining in regulation. Stephanie Anders led the Trail Blazers with 13 points and four assists, while Lenlee Klusman had nine points. JWCC (6-9) opens Mid-West Athletic Conference play Saturday at Parkland College in Champaign, Ill.
