97th annual Monroe City Tournament

Highland 70, Louisiana 56: Cameron Bringer scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter as the second-seeded Cougars outscored the Bulldogs 20-8 in the frame and propelled themselves to a spot in Saturday’s championship game. Alex Meyer added 20 points and Drew Mallett had 19 for Highland. Tremaine Chapman and Mason Washington led Louisiana with 17 points apiece.

Mark Twain 68, Paris 61: A 28-point lead dwindled to single digits in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers held on to advance to Friday’s  consolation championship. Conner Eckler led Mark Twain with 26 points, while Lukas McLeod added 15.

North Greene Spartan Classic

Greenfield/Northwestern 58, Western 35: Ethan Dixon led the Wildcats with 14 points, while Mason Smith added 13 in Western’s second of four games in the round-robin event. The Wildcats opened with a 60-24 victory over Pleasant Hill on Tuesday.

Girls Basketball

At Monroe City, Mo.

South Shelby 61, Highland 30: The top-seeded Lady Birds advanced to Saturday’s championship game by turning an 11-point halftime lead into a rout by holding the Cougars to 13 points in the second half. Kaylee Gaines led South Shelby with 16 points, while Ansley Bringer and Dehlis Dare had 14 points apiece for Highland.

Monroe City 60, Louisiana 23: The Panthers limited the Bulldogs to two points in the first quarter and built a 30-7 lead by halftime, cruising to the victory in the consolation bracket. Monroe City had six players score between seven and 10 points, led by Savannah Utterback with 10. The Panthers (1-4) will play for the consolation championship Friday night.

Men’s Basketball

At Hennessey Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Mount Mercy 78, Culver-Stockton College 74: Playing without two starters who fell ill before leaving for the road trip, the Wildcats suffered their second straight loss in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs opened the second half on a 19-9 run and ended the game on a 16-9 run. Javon Modester and Zac Rzewnicki led the Wildcats with 17 points apiece, while Jim King added 15 points. Rzewnicki had five assists and nine rebounds as well. C-SC is 10-2 overall and 1-2 in the Heart.

Women’s Basketball

At Hennessey Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Mount Mercy 73, Culver-Stockton College 69: The Mustangs scored the first eight points of overtime as the Wildcats lost for the third time in their last four games. Kaysie Newson’s 3-pointer with 8.8 seconds remaining in regulation gave C-Sc a 59-56 lead, but Mount Mercy’s Sam McPherson tied the game with a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining. Addison Newbon led the Wildcats with a career-high 28 points and nine rebounds. C-SC is 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the Heart.
