Prep Cross Country

At South Park, Quincy

Running Raider Invitational: The depth of the Quincy High School boys and girls cross country teams were on display, as was the Blue Devils’ high-end talent.

The boys race featured a showdown between Blue Devils senior Fiker Rosen and West Hancock senior Miles Sheppard. Rosen won the individual race in 15 minutes, 20 seconds — six seconds ahead of Sheppard — and led QHS to the team title with 44 points. West Hancock was second with 47 and Bowling Green was third with 82.

The Blue Devils’ Ayden Triplett was seventh (16:59) and Eric McClelland finished ninth (17:24). Liberty senior Cannen Wolf was sixth (16:26), while Quincy Notre Dame freshman Joe Warning finished 14th (17:37).

On the girls side, the Blue Devils had four runners in the top 10 and won the team title with 37 points. Pleasant Plains was second with 77 and Quincy Notre Dame third with 90.

QHS senior Anna Schuering won the individual title in 19:20, while Alexandria Meyers was eighth (20:48), Olivia Schuering was ninth (20:15) and Keeauna Scheufele was 10th (20:18). Monroe City’s Emmalee Williams was seventh (20:28), and Quincy Notre Dame’s Teresa Drotar was 11th (21:21). 

Prep Softball

At Veterans Complex, Hannibal, Mo.

Monroe City 6, Hannibal 2: The Panthers scored twice in the fifth inning and twice in the seventh to punctuate a non-conference victory. Monroe City snared the lead in the first inning when Carly Youngblood led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on Mackenzie Moss’ single. Abigail Smith led off the second with a triple and scored on a passed ball.

In the fifth, Smith delivered a two-run single. In the seventh, Smith added another RBI single and Youngblood forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Smith went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Moss and Belle Clark each had two hits. Kailynn Fuemmeler struck out seven and walked two to pick up the victory. Kylie McAfee had two hits for the Pirates.

At Ewing, Mo.

Highland 7, Canton 4: In the battle of Lewis County, the Cougars handed the Tigers their first loss of the season, scoring three times in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Payton Miller had an RBI double and Ashley Kaylor followed with an RBI triple to highlight the fifth inning. In the sixth, Miller had an RBI double and Haliegh Winter added a two-run single. Winter went 3 for 3 and Miller was 2 for 4. Miller also picked up the victory, striking out eight and walking three.

Kenzie Guilfoyle and Kinsey Biggerstaff each had two hits for Canton with Biggerstaff belting two doubles. Guilfoyle suffered the loss, striking out seven and walking four. In the top of the seventh, the Tigers scored twice with one out, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the game.

Girls Volleyball

At Mount Sterling, Ill.

Brown County d. Pittsfield: Katey Flynn finished with seven kills and five digs, while Klare Flynn had five kills and four blocks as the Hornets rolled to a 25-22, 25-13 victory. Gabby McGath 15 assists, three digs, an ace and a block for Brown County, which improved to 10-1.

At Korf Gym, Hannibal, Mo.

Columbia Hickman d. Hannibal: The Pirates suffered a three-set loss, falling 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 to the Kewpies. Bella Falconer led Hannibal with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Ashlyn Hess had 12 assists and seven digs and Nora Hark had five kills, nine digs and nine assists. The Pirates are 2-2.

Boys Golf

At Westview Golf Course, Quincy

Quincy Quadrangular: Quincy High School had three golfers break 40 and shot a 156 as a team to distance itself from the field. Quincy Notre Dame was second at 168, followed by Central (200) and Rushville-Industry (201). The Blue Devils’ Cameron Bergman took medalist honors with a 37, while Brady Walker and Raulin Zanger each shot a 39. Ross Thompson led the Raiders with a 39. 

At Old Orchard Country Club, Pittsfield, Ill.

Pittsfield Quadrangular: TJ Reel and Brennan Tomhave each shot a 42 to share medalist honors as Pittsfield took the top spot among the teams with a 173. Payson Seymour posted a 199, followed by the Pittsfield JV (213) and Beardstown (215). Gavin Logsdon shot a 46 for Payson.

Girls Golf

At Westview Golf Course, Quincy

Quincy Quadrangular: In the final home event of the season, Quincy High School continued its winning ways with a 151 total. Quincy Notre Dame was second at 174, followed by Kirksville (191) and Hannibal (214). The Blue Devils’ Laci Novosel was medalist with a 35. The Raiders’ Hana Knuffman shot a 38 and Blair Eftink posted a 39.

At Macon, Mo.

Macon Triangular: Ella Goldinger shot a season-best 47 to lead Palmyra to the victory against Macon and Schuyler County. Maddie Jawad shot a 51 for the Panthers.

Girls Tennis

At Washington Park, Springfield, Ill.

Quincy High School 7, Sacred Heart-Griffin 2: The Blue Devils lost just four games in winning the top three singles matches and had Amelia Willing outlast the Cyclones’ Maddie McKay 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 4 singles in picking up the non-conference dual victory. Quincy won the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches in straight sets, improving to 4-2 in team duals.

At Hannibal, Mo.

Hannibal 5, Quincy Notre Dame 4: The Raiders’ Lia Quintero picked up an 8-2 victory at No. 1 singles before the Pirates outlasted the rest of the lineup. Hannibal’s Gracie Martin, Brooklyn Haye and Brynn Burton each won a singles match 8-4, while Irelan Lomax won 8-6 and Lanie Privett won 8-3. The Raiders swept the doubles matches.

At Mexico, Mo.

Palmyra 7, Mexico 2: The Panthers’ Molly Gottom fought for a 9-8 victory at No. 3 singles, winning the tiebreaker 7-3 to propel Palmyra to the dual victory. The Panthers won five singles matches and captured the top two doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Katy Rindon and Maura Gottman winning 8-2.

Women’s Volleyball

At the Petty Athletic Complex, St. Louis

Missouri Baptist d. Culver-Stockton College: The Spartans, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation and the defending NAIA national champions, rolled to a 25-7, 25-17, 25-15 victory. Madison McClain and Ali Scott led the Wildcats with four kills apiece. C-SC is 4-8.
