Prep Cross Country

At Bob Mays Park, Quincy

Tom Oakley Invitational: Anna Schuering, Alexandria Meyers and Olivia Schuering finished 1-2-3 in the individual standings as the Quincy High School girls won their home event. Only two of the nine teams had enough runners to qualify for the team event. The Blue Devils finished with 16 points, while Quincy Notre Dame had 22.

Anna Schuering topped the 43-runner field by finishing in 19 minutes, 32 seconds. Meyers finished in 20:40 and Olivia Schuering posted a 21:07. Liberty’s Arianna Neisen was fourth overall in 21:08, while QND’s Teresa Drotar was seventh in 21:43.

On the boys side, West Hancock’s Miles Sheppard ran away from the field and led the Titans to the team title. Sheppard finished first in 15:38, while the Titans had three runners in the top 10 and collected 38 points. QHS was second with 43, Burlington (Iowa) took third with 94 points and Liberty finished fourth with 100.

Liberty’s Cannen Wolf finished second in 16:35, while the Blue Devils’ Ayden Triplett (17:17) and Eric McClelland (17:19) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Prep Football

At Jacksonville, Ill.

Brown County 34, Jacksonville Routt 6: Gabe Blakeley’s interception on the second play of the game set the tone for the Hornets to rebound from last week’s loss to Beardstown and forge a three-way tie for the Western Illinois Valley Conference North Division lead. Brody Woodward scored on a 5-yard run for Brown County’s first touchdown before the Hornets closed the first half with three scores in the final six minutes. Blakeley caught a 20-yard TD pass and Cole Behymer had scoring catches of 52 and 9 yards. The Hornets are 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the WIVC North.

Boys Soccer

At Burlington, Iowa

Great River Classic: Quincy High School salvaged a victory in its final appearance, while Quincy Notre Dame saw a second-half comeback fall slightly short.

Senior forward Spencer Jenkins recorded a hat trick as the Blue Devils picked up a 4-1 victory over Highland (Ill.) Boen Brockmiller scored the other goal, while Carter Venvertloh had two assists and Blake Bunch dished out another assist. The Blue Devils are 9-6-3 overall.

The Raiders fell behind Mount Carmel 13 minutes in before Tanner Anderson headed in a Brock Evans corner kick. Mount Carmel scored twice in the final 23 minutes of the half for a 3-1 edge, but QND answered as Anderson converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute and Quinton Hankins knocked home a long throw-in from Jake Hoyt. Mount Carmel scored with less than two minutes to play for a 4-3 victory.

Prep Softball

At Queen City, Mo.

Schuyler County Tournament: Back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the top of the sixth inning propelled Monroe City to a 3-2 victory over Canton, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1, in the tournament championship game. The Panthers trailed 2-1 before Pratt and Nash both singled to left field with runners in scoring position.

Pratt finished with two of Monroe City’s seven hits, while Carly Youngblood doubled and scored a run. Kailynn Fuemmeler allowed two unearned runs and six hits while striking out four to grab the victory. Nariah Clay, Kenzie Guilfoyle and Kiley Biggerstaff had two hits apiece for the Tigers.

Girls Volleyball

At Rushville, Ill.

Rushville-Industry Tournament: Brown County won its first tournament championship in program history and reached the 20-victory plateau for the first time ever in the process.

The Hornets beat Petersburg PORTA 25-21, 25-14 behind 10 kills from Katey Flynn and 18 assists from Gabby McGath. A 25-17, 25-14 victory over Rushville-Industry followed as Katey Flynn had nine kills and eight digs and Klare Flynn had eight kills and three blocks. The Flynns combined for 14 kills in a 25-14, 25-14 victory over Beardstown with McGath dishing out 20 assists.

Pittsfield pushed Brown County before the Hornets secured a 25-18, 29-27 victory. Katey Flynn had 11 kills and nine digs, while Klare Flynn had seven kills and six blocks and McGath had 29 assists. A 25-15, 25-10 victory over Midwest Central capped the tourney title. Gracie Hedden finished with three kills, four digs and four aces.

At Korf Gym, Hannibal, Mo.

Hannibal d. Marshall: The Pirates won their third straight North Central Missouri Conference match with the 25-8, 25-11, 25-12 victory. Bella Falconer had nine kills and seven digs for Hannibal, while Kate Maune had nine kills and five digs. Nora Hark finished with 14 assists, four digs, three kills and two blocks. Hannibal is 9-5-4 overall.

Women’s Volleyball

At the Ruth Lilly Center, Indianapolis

Indianapolis d. Quincy University: The Hawks couldn’t sustain any momentum from winning the first set and suffered a 17-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-23 loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Sarah Brown and Elizabeth Lightner led the Hawks with 14 kills apiece, while America Galvan had 25 digs and Makayla Knoblauch dished out 46 assists. QU falls to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the GLVC.

At the Student Activity Center, Quincy

JWCC Quadrangular: John Wood Community College went 2-1, sandwiching victories against Kankakee Community College (25-21, 25-12, 25-6) and Saint Louis Community College (25-22, 25-13, 24-26, 25-11) around a loss to Carl Sandburg College (25-19, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23). Paige Knuffman led the Trail Blazers with 23 kills, 30 digs and nine aces in the three matches combined, while Isadora Gasparini had 45 assists and Kaylee Burgess had 41 assists and 19 digs. The Trail Blazers are 13-8.

At Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Mount Mercy d. Culver-Stockton College: The Wildcats suffered a 25-16, 25-20, 25-22 loss in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. Heleine Filipe led C-SC with 10 kills, while Veiauna Herman had 19 digs. The Wildcats fall to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the Heart.

Men’s Soccer

At Springfield, Mo.

Culver-Stockton College 2, Evangel 1: The Wildcats allowed the winless Crusaders to score less than 10 minutes into the game, but equalized less than four minutes later and won the game in the second half. Manuel Gavina scored an unassisted goal in the 58th minute. C-SC’s other goal came from Adam Fowler in the 13th minute.

Women’s Soccer

At Normal, Ill.

Heartland 9, John Wood Community College 0: The nation’s No. 1-ranked team dispatched of the Trail Blazers, who fell to 4-5-1 overall.

At Springfield, Mo.

Culver-Stockton College 6, Evangel 0: The Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup was called 30 minutes early due to inclement weather, but it was over before that. Montse Caparros had a hat trick and Jody Ellis dished out three assists as the Wildcats improved to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Heart.
