At Kirksville, Mo.

Kirksville 57, Monroe City 54: The No. 1-ranked team in Class 3 was limited to just two made field goals in the fourth quarter and suffered its first loss of the season. The Panthers led 13-10 after the first quarter, but managed just two field goals in the second quarter and were outscored 23-12 and trailed by eight at halftime. Monroe City went 22 of 29 from the line, but made just 15 field goals. Joshua Talton led the Panthers with 27 points. Isaac Danielson led the Tigers with 20 points. Monroe City is 1-1 overall.

At QHS gym, Quincy

Quincy High School 55, Sterling 23: The Blue Devils bolted to a 17-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and limited the Golden Warriors to seven first-half points in dominating the Western Big 6 Conference game. Taylor Fohey led the Blue Devils with 14 points, while Leah Chevalier added 13 points. The Blue Devils improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the WB6.

At Kirksville, Mo.

Kirksville 51, Monroe City 17: The Panthers trailed 21-13 at halftime, but the Tigers outscored them 23-1 in the third quarter. Mari Gares led Monroe City with five points. The Panthers are 0-3.

At Overland Park, Kan.

Johnson County Community College 89, John Wood Community College 79: The Cavaliers, ranked third in the NJCAA Division II national poll, owned the inside against the Trail Blazers, outscoring them 48-28 in the paint. Trailing by seven at halftime, the Trail Blazers saw the deficit grow to 12 before chiseling it back to 73-70 with nine minutes to play. The Cavaliers pushed the advantage back to 10 by the three-minute mark. Brandon Kracht went 4 of 7 from 3-point range and led the Trail Blazers with 21 points, while Ja’Veon Taylor added 18. JWCC is 6-4 overall.

Women’s Basketball

At Penn Gymnasium, Oskaloosa, Iowa

Culver-Stockton College 71, William Penn 54: The Wildcats earned their first Heart of America Athletic Conference victory with a dominant defensive effort. The Statesmen shot just 34.5 percent from the field in the first half while falling behind by 11 points, then were held to eight points in the third quarter. The Wildcats dominated the block, outsourcing the Statesmen 42-16 in the paint. Addison Newbon led C-SC with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Taylor Green had 12 points. C-SC is 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the Heart.

At Student Activity Center, Quincy

Johnson County Community College 56, John Wood Community College 39: The Trail Blazers limited the No. 2-ranked Cavaliers to their lowest offensive output of the season, but JWCC managed just five points in the first quarter and 13 points in the first half. Stephanie Anders led the Trail Blazers with 10 points and Maddi Meyer added eight. JWCC is 4-6 overall.

Prep Wrestling

At O’Fallon, Mo.

Fort Zumwalt North Tournament: Hannibal finished second in the team standings with six wrestlers placing among the top three individually. The Pirates had five champions — Tristen Essig at 120 pounds, Cody Culp at 126, Chad Culp at 132, Nathan Messina at 152 and Trevor Wilson at 170. Reign Creech took second at 106.

At Arnold, Mo.

Ron Sauer Duals: Quincy High School won two of its five duals, beating Francis Howell Central 42-36 and Wentzville Holt 62-6. The Blue Devils lost to Edwardsville 43-32, Seckman 56-24 and Whitfield 46-40. At 106 pounds, freshman Hugh Sharrow won his first two matches by technical fall and major decision before recording three straight forfeit victories. Kayden Garrett, at 170, went 4-1 with three victories by pinfall, while Gavin Schumacher, at 220, had two victories by pinfall. Dylan Becker, 132, won twice by decision and one by pinfall.

At Toledo, Ill.

Cumberland Super Duals: Quincy Notre Dame finished its season-opening event by winning three of its five duals. The Raiders defeated Cumberland 42-34, Taylorville 48-36 and Effingham 48-33. QND lost to Colfax 53-26 and Shelbyville 48-30. Curtis Steinkamp won three of his four matches at 132 pounds with two pins, Ryan Darnell recorded two pins at 195, while Luke Bliven (138) and Tristan Pritts (170) each had two pins as well.
