Class 1 District 3: Canton’s Trevor Biggerstaff had two goals in a 3-0 first-round victory over Elsberry/Silex on Monday. The Tigers advance to the semifinals and will play Lutheran St. Charles at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Women’s College Basketball
At Student Activity Center, Quincy, Ill.
JWCC 55, Mount Mercy JV 43: John Wood outscored Mount Mercy 19-10 in the fourth quarter to win its opener. Anastacia Massey had 13 points and nine rebounds, Stephanie Anders had 10 points and seven rebounds, and Maddie McFerrin had 10 points and three rebounds. The Trail Blazers shot just 33.9 percent (21 for 62) from the field and had 25 turnovers.
Men’s College Basketball
At Charles Field House, Canton, Mo.
C-SC 74, HLGU 59: Jalen Blaize, making his Wildcats debut, scored a game-high 23 points for Culver-Stockton in its season opener. Blaize, a transfer from Central Missouri, was 7-of-14 from the field and made 5 of 10 3-point shots. He also had four steals and three assists.
After playing to a 33-33 draw after one half, the Trojans scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to take a 41-35 lead. The Wildcats responded with a 19-6 run over the next seven minutes to jump ahead 54-47, and the Trojans never got closer than five points thereafter.
Senior transfer Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for C-SC. Seth Larson came off the bench to score 13 points. The Wildcats faced 17 Trojan turnovers and turned the miscues into 32 points. Joe McBride led Hannibal-LaGrange with 16 points.
