CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Nolan Wosman entered Tuesday night’s Prospect League doubleheader with a .180 batting average.

The infielder from Quincy University and Palmyra, Mo., left Capaha Park with a .310 average after collecting five hits against the Cape Catfish, which split a doubleheader with the Quincy Gems. The visitors won the first game 5-3, and the Catfish won the nightcap 8-4. The temperature to start the doubleheader was above 100 degrees.

The Gems (6-8) are tied with Clinton for second place in the Great River Division, two games behind Normal. Quincy and Clinton play Thursday night at QU Stadium.

Quincy fell behind 1-0 in the first game as Catfish starter Jordan Zuger had four strikeouts in the first two innings. Quincy picked up two runs in the fourth on an RBI double from Ethan Moore and an RBI single by Drew Townsend. Wosman tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on a homer to left field.

Cape scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Kolby Kiser came on in relief of Cale Kolacia with two runners on and one out, and he got two ground ball outs to end the threat. Kiser also pitched a perfect sixth inning.

Moore hit a sacrifice fly to score Wosman in the top of the seventh. Andrew Fay pitched the seventh and gave up a leadoff double to Blake Barton. After a fly ball moved Barton to third, he tried to score on a fly ball by Christopher Hall but was thrown out by Townsend, the Gems’ left fielder.

The Gems took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second inning of the second game on a bases-loaded double by Wosman, but the Catfish scored four runs against Quincy starter Bennett Stice in the second inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The Gems were limited to five hits, and three were by Wosman. The rest of the lineup had two hits in 23 at-bats.
