Wiewel, Raiders lock in and lock up Crimsons to secure fourth consecutive victory
QUINCY — The way things unfolded in the top of the first inning Saturday at Ferd Niemann Jr. Memorial Ballfield left Abram Wiewel looking for control.
One swing seemed to help him find it.
The No. 3 hitter in the Quincy Notre Dame baseball team’s lineup got a first-inning merry-go-round going with his one-out single through the left side of the infield. It sparked a three-run frame, and Wiewel shut down Jacksonville thereafter in a 3-2 victory that is the Raiders’ fourth in a row.
Wiewel earned his second victory of the season on the mound, allowing just two hits and four total baserunners over the final six innings. The Crimsons scored twice on two hits and two wild pitches in the first inning.
That’s what made Wiewel’s response at the plate and the mini-rally the Raiders put together so valuable.
Wiewel finished 3 for 3, running his hit streak to eight consecutive games, while Logan Sutton and Logan Woodyard had two hits apiece for QND (5-3).
