Uppinghouse, Newbold wins titles as QHS wrestlers finish fourth at Mascoutah
MASCOUTAH, Ill. — Owen Uppinghouse pinned his way to a title. Bryor Newbold nearly did the same thing. With six other wrestlers finishing in the top eight in their respective weight class, the Quincy High School wrestling team had another stellar showing.
The Blue Devils finished fourth in the 33-team Mascoutah Invitational.
Uppinghouse, wrestling at 160 pounds, improved to 19-0 overall by pinning four consecutive opponents to win his weight class.
The senior opened by pinning O’Fallon’s Darrian Bronson in 59 seconds. He stuck Normal Community’s Mitchell Mosbach in 5:42 and flatbacked Lincoln’s Dawson McConnell in 3:13 in the semifinals. In the championship match, Uppinghouse pinned Bloomington’s Maddox Kirts in 2:21.
At 182 pounds, Newbold needed just 42 seconds to pin Normal Community’s Mason Caraway in his opening match. He stuck Troy Triad’s Koen Rodebuch in 5:20 and pinned West Frankfort’s Conner Henson in 3:10 in the semifinals. In the title match, Newbold earned a 9-2 decision over Fort Zumwalt North’s Deacon Moran.
Newbold is now 17-2 this season.
Other top place finishers for the Blue Devils were Hugh Sharrow, fifth at 106; Eli Roberts, fifth at 132; Brody Baker, eighth at 138; Max Miller, third at 170; Payton Eddy, fifth at 170; and Todd Smith, seventh at 285.
