Townsend’s grand slam in eighth ties game, Gems score twice in ninth to steal victory at Alton

ALTON, Ill. — Despite falling behind by four runs and three pitchers giving up 11 walks, the Quincy Gems rallied to score six runs in the final two innings and defeat the Alton River Dragons 8-6 on Monday night in a Prospect League game at Lloyd Hopkins Field.

The Gems (5-6 second half, 24-19 overall) are a half-game behind Normal (6-6) and Burlington (5-5) for first place in the Great River Division.

Quincy trailed 6-2 entering the top of the eighth inning. Dayson Croes walked, Lucas Loos walked, and Jonathan Latham was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Drew Townsend then hit a game-tying grand slam.

The Gems took the lead in the top of the ninth. Dylan Wipperman, Hayden Moore and Croes walked to start the inning. Wipperman scored on a passed ball, and Moore scored on a groundout by Loos.

Stefan Stockwell earned the victory in relief for the Gems, pitching three innings and allowing one hit and no runs. 

Moore and Townsend combined for four of Quincy’s seven hits.
