CARTHAGE, Ill. — A slow start didn’t translate to a sluggish finish for the Quincy Notre Dame girls basketball team.

Defense turned everything around.

Trailing Illini West 9-7 at the end of the first quarter Thursday night, the state-ranked Raiders shut out the Chargers in the second quarter, then scored 23 points in the third quarter to roll to a 56-28 victory.

QND scored eight points in the second quarter to take a 15-9 lead into halftime, but junior guard Sage Stratton made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the third quarter to help the Raiders pull away. Stratton finished with four treys and a game-high 16 points.

Marie Eversman and Tristan Pieper each added eight points for QND, ranked fourth in the Class 3A state poll with an 18-2 record. Elly Krieg led the Chargers with 13 points.
