QUINCY — The boys basketball title chase in the Western Big 6 Conference has a clear favorite and a surprising contender, and the league slate hasn’t reached Christmas yet.

Rock Island established itself as the team to beat, going to Moline’s Wharton Field House on Friday night and winning a battle of unbeatens with its 76-70 victory over Moline. The Rocks’ Jaylin Randle scored 16 points in the first half, finished with 24 points and helped the Rocks control the paint. Baker Beal, Rocky’s 6-foot-6 forward, had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Meanwhile, a team that struggled through the truncated 2021 season is rolling toward its own showdown with Moline. Quincy High School improved to 3-0 in the league — the same WB6 record as Rock Island — with a 27-point victory over Sterling on Friday night.

The Blue Devils have beaten all three league opponents so far by 27 or more points and have led at halftime of all seven of its games. The Blue Devils play host to the Maroons at 7 p.m. next Friday in the final home game before the Christmas holiday.

Quincy is assured of heading into the new year no worse than tied for second in the league.

Galesburg is the other team in the WB6 with a winning record. The Silver Streaks sit tied with Moline at 2-1 following a four-point victory over United Township on Friday night.
