QUINCY — The Quincy High School wrestling team is sending four wrestlers to the Class 3A Granite City Sectional after the Blue Devils finished fourth as a team Saturday in the regional at the QHS gym.

The Blue Devils’ Kayden Garrett and Gage Bringer each finished as the runner-up in their respective weight class, while two others fought through the consolation bracket to finish in the top three at their weight.

Garrett, a senior at 170 pounds, received a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed and pinned Edwardsville’s Landon Schickendanz in 1 minute, 6 seconds in the semifinals. In the championship match against second-seeded Austin Stewart of Collinsville, neither scored in the first two periods.

Garrett, who has a 34-11 record, began the third period down and scored an escape for a 1-0 lead. Stewart recorded a takedown to win the match and the regional title.

Bringer wasn’t seeded at 195 pounds, but he beat third-seeded Shamonte Matthews of Belleville West with a pin in 1:50. In the semifinals, Bringer pinned second-seeded Leo Bisesi of O’Fallon in 1:41.

Bringer, a senior with a 26-22 record, couldn’t make it a sweep of seeded foes, losing to top-seeded Evan Holderer of Edwardsville after getting pinned in 1:26.

Quincy freshman Evan Wakefield at 113 and sophomore Bryor Newbold at 182 both finished third, while senior Dylan Becker was fourth at 132.

Wakefield pinned Collinsville’s Carter Bub in 4:41 in the third-place match, while Newbold scored a pair of pins in the consolation bracket — he stuck Edwardsville’s Nolan Rowe in 1:45 and Belleville West’s Brody O’Donnell in 3:00 — to advance.
