Raiders suffer first loss of season after scoring just three second-quarter points against Cougars
BREESE, Ill. — The Quincy Notre Dame girls basketball team couldn’t speed up top-ranked Breese Central the way it has so many opponents during the undefeated start to this season.
That explains why the Raiders suffered their first loss Saturday.
Breese Central committed just 11 turnovers, while shooting 45.7 percent from the field in a 63-47 victory over QND in the PAWS Shootout at Breese Central High School.
Trailing by seven points after the first quarter, the Raiders, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, were outscored 18-3 in the second quarter and trailed 36-14 at halftime. The Cougars, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, went 15 of 19 from the free-throw line and made 6 of 15 3-pointers.
QND made just 6 of 13 free throws and 5 of 15 3-pointers. Sage Stratton led the Raiders (16-1) with 15 points, while Ellie Bozarth and Tristan Pieper scored eight points apiece. Kylie Rakers led Breese Central (16-1) with 18 points, while Cece Toennies finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
