QUINCY — The tournament bookends defensively might not have been ideal, but the persistence and aggressiveness with which the Quincy Notre Dame boys soccer team attacked in between those moments led to a championship effort.

The Raiders finished 3-0 and won the title of the 33rd annual QND/Quincy Recycle Tournament at Advance Physical Therapy Field, beating United Township 5-0 on Saturday morning and holding off Jacksonville 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Quincy High School finished 2-1 in the tourney, beating Jacksonville 4-1 and losing to Ladue Horton Watkins 4-2 on Saturday at Flinn Stadium.

QND (4-1) led United Township 1-0 at halftime on the strength of Leo Cann’s goal 10 minutes into the game. The Raiders proceeded to score four times in the first 16 minutes of the second half, getting goals from Cole Henkenmeier, Jake Hoyt, Tanner Anderson and Cann.

Against Jacksonville, Anderson gave the Raiders the lead midway through the first half when he buried a free kick from 20 yards out. The all-state forward scored off a Cann assist to make it 2-0 at halftime. Anderson tapped in his third goal early in the second half when the Crimsons goalkeeper fumbled a shot by John Drew.

Jacksonville scored in the 55th minute and the 76th minute to turn it into a one-goal game. The Raiders then closed the door on their fourth consecutive victory.

At Flinn Stadium, Carter Venvertloh scored a pair of goals as the Blue Devils built their advantage against Jacksonville. Josh Stupavsky and Nolan Fleer also scored, while Evan Sohn, Andrew Brown and Boen Brockmiller each had an assist.

Ladue dominated play in the first half of the afternoon game and led 2-0 at halftime before Venvertloh scored twice early in the second half to tie it. Ladue scored the final two goals to earn a split with the Quincy schools — the Rams lost 5-2 against QND on Friday.
