Quincy tennis team advances to USTA Illinois district championships

QUINCY — A group of Quincy tennis players is headed to the postseason.

Playing at the U.S. Tennis Association men’s NTRP 3.5 level, the Quincy team won the Western Division of the Illinois Mid-South District by splitting a doubleheader Saturday in Springfield and finishing with a 5-1 overall record.

Quincy advances to the district championships, which will be played August 4 in Bloomington, and will face the winner of the Eastern Division, which is made up of four teams from the Champaign-Urbana region.

The team from Springfield and one of the squads from Bloomington still have a match to play, but neither can catch Quincy in the team standings.

The members of the Quincy squad are Doug Mallett, Gerry Korb, Travis Friye, Rick Crider, Bryan Fasano, Rob Hernandez, Joe Laws, Martin McCarthy, Sammy Shumake, Anderson Knapp, Bob Catalpa and Bob Soltys.
