QND’s Zanger, Brown battle way to third at sectionals, head to state along with Ley

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The Quincy Notre Dame girls tennis team’s top doubles tandem is headed to the Class 1A state tournament after finishing third Saturday in the Jacksonville Sectional.

The Raiders’ Morgan Zanger and Kaitlyn Brown beat Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Lucia Hassebrock and Catalina Mosquera 6-2, 6-1 in the third-place match. Zanger and Brown fell to Rohester’s Julia Musgracve and Cora Haupt 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Zanger and Brown secured their state berth on Friday night when they beat Jerseyville’s Kate Hudson and Charlie Bockstruck 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

They will be joined at the state tournament by senior Alyssa Ley, who finished fourth in the singles bracket. Ley lost to Jerseyville’s Kiley King 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals and Jerseyville’s Neely Goetten 6-3, 6-0 in the third-place match.

Ley had reached the semifinals by beating Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Laney Aleman 7-5, 6-2.

The Class 1A state tournament begins Thursday with Arlington Heights in the Chicagoland area as the tournament headquarters.
