BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The lower Beau Eftink’s scores go, the higher his spot on the leaderboard gets.

This week, it took him to the top.

The Quincy Notre Dame sophomore golfer posted his lowest competitive round to date, shooting a 3-under 69 in the opening round of the State Farm Youth Classic at Prairie Vista Golf Course. It gave him a four-stroke lead, which he rode to the championship of the boys 14-15 division.

Eftink shot a 4-over 76 during Tuesday’s second round to finish at 1-over 145, two strokes clear of Riverdale’s Mason Smyser. El Paso-Gridley’s Braden Hayes, who edged Eftink for the championship last week at the Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championships, was third at 152.

Three of Eftink’s four nine-hole scores during the two tournaments were at even par or better.

Eftink also earned the LPGC/SFYC Grand Champion trophy for the boys 14-15 division. The grand champion is determined by the combined score of the past two week’s junior events.

Carthage’s Nolan Murphy finished 10th in the boys 12-13 division, posting a two-day score of 165.
