O’FALLON, Ill. — Sophia Gold and Saya Geisendorfer couldn’t have asked for a better start to their rounds Monday at the Class 2A O’Fallon Sectional.

The steady play that followed allowed the Quincy High School girls golfers to earn spots in the state tournament field.

Gold finished eighth individually and Geisendorfer tied for 14th, while the Blue Devils finished fifth as a team in a deep field at Far Oaks Golf Club. QHS posted a 336 team total, 17 strokes out of the top three.

Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin won the sectional championship with a 312, while O’Fallon (318) and Normal U-High (319) also advanced.

Gold, a sophomore, birdied the par-5 first hole and shot a 1-over 37 on the front nine. She opened the back nine with seven consecutive pars, but a couple of hiccups on the final two holes dropped her out of the top five. She finished at 5-over 77.

Geisendorfer, a senior, played the front nine in 2-over and finished at 8-over 80. Maddie O’Brien shot an 85 and Dulaney Bennett posted a 94 for the Blue Devils.

Gold and Geisendorfer will tee it up Friday in the Class 2A state tournament at Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth.
