QUINCY — A pair of doubles teams will represent Quincy at the girls state tennis tournaments this weekend in the Chicago suburbs.

In Class 2A, the Quincy High School senior tandem of Lily and Phoebe Hayes finished fourth at the Belleville West Sectional, while the Quincy Notre Dame duo of Morgan Zanger and Kaitlyn Brown took third at the Class 1A Alton Marquette Sectional.

The Hayes twins were unseeded in the Belleville West bracket, but beat the third-seeded Chatham Glenwood combo of Simmi Mander and Elise DeStasio 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. They then beat the sixth-seeded Belleville West team of Olivia Eiskant and Taylor Tieman 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to wrap up play Saturday.

On Monday, the Hayes twins suffered a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 loss to Edwardsville’s second-seeded duo of Alyssa Wise and Sophie Byron and dropped another marathon match in the third-place match to Springfield’s Nischitha Korrapati and Esther Rossi, losing 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2.

Zanger and Brown were seeded sixth at Alton but knocked off the third-seeded team of Brooklyn Budd and Laney Aleman of Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin in the quarterfinals. They lost to Jerseyville’s Tessa Crawford and Elise Noble — the No. 1 seeds — 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals, but bounced back to win a marathon in the third-place match.

Zanger and Brown beat fourth-seeded Kate Hudson and Emma McCormick 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 to take third and carry momentum to the state tournament.

The state tennis tournament begins Thursday in the Chicago suburb of Buffalo Grove.
