QUINCY — One of the top prep basketball players in the history of the state of Illinois and an icon from the greatest era in the storied tradition of the Quincy High School boys basketball program is coming home to speak at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet.

Hall of Fame point guard Bruce Douglas will be one of two featured speakers during the event taking place at 4 p.m. May 1 at Quincy University’s Pepsi Arena.

Dan Meers, who is the KC Wolf mascot for the Kansas City Chiefs, will be the other featured speaker.

Douglas played at QHS from 1978-82, guiding the Blue Devils to a 123-5 record and three state tournament appearances in that span, including the 1981 Class AA state championship. He scored a program-record 2,040 career points and was named a McDonald’s All-American his senior season as well as Mr. Basketball in Illinois.

In 2006, the Illinois High School Association unveiled a list of “100 legends of the IHSA boys basketball tournament,” which included Douglas. He also was named one of the top 10 prep players of the century by the Chicago Tribune.

Douglas went on to start all four seasons at the University of Illinois, where he earned first-team All-Big Ten Conference honors as a sophomore and second-team honors as a junior and senior. He still holds the Illini record for career steals (324) and assists (765).

Anyone interested in attending the dinner event can register through the FCA online at WesternILFCA.org or by contacting a table host. There is no charge to attend the event, but seating is limited to 40 eight-person tables. The FCA will be asking for donations as this is the organizations largest fundraiser of the year.
