QUINCY — A pair of Quincy doubles teams recently placed in the top four in their respective division at the United States Tennis Association’s NTRP Nationals at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.

Gerry Korb and Rick Crider placed third in the 55-and-over men’s 3.5 tournament, beating fellow Quincyans Joe Laws and Bryan Fasano 4-3, 4-1 in the third-place match.

Both doubles teams were representing the Midwest Region, having advanced through sectional play in Wisconsin. Both were undefeated in the group stage, winning all three pool-play matches in straight sets.

The USTA used a “fast four” format in which each set consists of four-point games with no ad. If the game reaches deuce, the team receiving serve declares which player will receive the serve for the game’s final point. The first team winning four games wins the set. If the teams each win three games, a five-point tiebreaker is used to determine the winner.
