Maroons sweep Blue Devils in WB6 twinbill to stay atop league standings

QUINCY — The Quincy High School baseball team dropped both ends of a Western Big 6 Conference doubleheader Saturday against league front-runner Moline at QU Stadium.

The Maroons won the opener 5-3 despite getting outhit by the Blue Devils, while the nightcap turned into a rout as Moline won 14-1.

In the first game, Quincy built a 3-2 lead through four innings by scoring single runs in three consecutive frames. In the second, Jansen Lawson and Nate Konrad connected for back-to-back one-out singles before Owen Zanger plated Lawson with a sacrifice fly.

In the third, Gavin Powell led off with a walk, went to third on Kyle Taylor’s one-out single and scored on Tykell Hammers’ single through the left side of the infield. In the fourth, Zanger reached on an error, went to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a passed ball.

Moline (9-6, 7-0 WB6) erased the QHS advantage in the fifth when Alex Schimmel and Dylan Phelps hit solo home runs one batter apart. The Maroons tacked on a run in the seventh.

Quincy (8-10, 3-4 WB6) outhit Moline 7-5, getting singles from seven different hitters. QHS right-hander Brady Lowe tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs, four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

In the second game, Moline scored five times in the second inning, led 9-1 through four innings and tacked on five runs in the seventh. The Blue Devils’ lone run came in the third inning when Hammers doubled with two outs, Lowe singled and an error committed by the Maroons when Lowe stole second base allowed Hammers to score.

The Blue Devils were limited to six hits, while the Maroons had just eight hits but capitalized on 10 walks and three Quincy errors.
